What Are PFAS?

PFAS are per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, also known as “forever chemicals”.  PFAS are a family of chemicals distinguished by having at least one carbon molecule bonded with one fluorine molecule.  These molecular bonds are always man-made and created in a lab.  PFAS never occur in nature.  They are known as “forever chemicals” due to their persistent nature.

Why And How Are They Used? 

PFAS are ubiquitous and are used in a wide variety of products and manufacturing processes.  They are highly effective at creating non-stick and low-friction coatings, water resistant barriers, and fire-resistant lubrication.

Why Are PFAS A Problem? 

PFAS have been shown to cause significant health issues.  PFAS bioaccumulate in our bodies and we have no mechanism for removing them.  We are exposed to these chemicals daily through our drinking water, food chain, and consumer products.

These chemicals primarily attach to our endocrine system, disrupting normal functioning of our hormone, reproductive, thyroid, liver, kidney, and pancreatic organs and systems.  PFAS are also known to lower immune response.  Additionally, they have been linked to serious health issues in children.
